The Leaders Behind Winning Organisations

When we think about success in sport, the spotlight naturally falls on elite athletes, world-class coaches and championship-winning performances. Yet behind every high-performing organisation is something less visible: exceptional leadership.

As private equity investment continues to reshape the sports industry, one principle is becoming increasingly clear: capital can accelerate growth, but leadership determines whether that growth is sustainable.

Investment can modernise infrastructure, unlock commercial opportunities and fuel expansion, but without experienced executives to provide strategic direction, organisational stability and long-term vision, financial backing alone is unlikely to deliver lasting success.

City Football Group is a prime example. Since technology investment firm Silver Lake acquired a minority stake in 2019, the organisation has continued to expand its global multi-club model while maintaining a consistent leadership structure and long-term strategic vision.

That combination of investment, governance and executive stability has helped sustain both commercial growth and sporting success.

Chelsea FC offers a contrasting perspective. Following its acquisition by the Clearlake Capital-led consortium in 2022, the club committed significant resources to player recruitment, infrastructure and analytics. However, frequent leadership changes and evolving strategic priorities highlighted the challenges of delivering transformation without organisational continuity.

While the club continues to build for the future, its experience demonstrates that investment is most effective when paired with stable leadership and a clear strategic direction.

Formula One provides another compelling illustration of leadership creating value. After CVC Capital Partners acquired the commercial rights in 2006, the focus extended well beyond the sport itself.

Through strong commercial leadership, global media expansion and operational transformation, Formula One became one of private equity's most successful sports investments before its sale to Liberty Media in 2016.

CVC has since continued investing across major sporting properties, including LaLiga and the Six Nations, reflecting a broader recognition that governance, executive capability and commercial leadership are central to long-term value creation.

The same thinking is evident in the PGA Tour's partnership with Strategic Sports Group. Backed by experienced investors, including Fenway Sports Group, the consortium brings more than capital to the table. It contributes decades of expertise in scaling global sports organisations, strengthening governance and driving sustainable growth; demonstrating that investors increasingly value leadership capability alongside financial investment.

Research reinforces what these examples show in practice. Deloitte argues that today's sports organisations require leaders who can balance commercial growth, governance, innovation and high-performance culture in an increasingly complex environment.

Strong leadership not only attracts investment but also strengthens organisational resilience, improves talent retention and creates long-term competitive advantage.

For investors, boards and executive teams, the message is clear: leadership is no longer simply an operational function, it is a strategic asset. As investment in sport continues to accelerate, organisations that prioritise experienced leadership, effective governance and long-term succession planning will be better positioned to create enduring value than those relying on capital alone.

At Redbox Talent Partners, we believe the foundations of success are built long before the first whistle blows. They are built in the boardroom, by leaders who can unite vision, investment and execution. In today's sports industry, sustainable competitive advantage belongs not simply to those who invest the most, but to those who lead the best.
